Reflections on the Demo
The worst part about doing this demo, which I've done before, is stopping people so they can tell their stories, since we don't have enough time to actually finish the entire project.
One of the things that sometimes happened, and happened here, was that people use the very bare bones example as the way in which to begin and they don't follow the directions. This isn't a big deal, but it does lead to several important steps being left out. They still get a good amount of story ideas out of it, but there are pieces missing. I circulated to do some course correction as needed.
The demonstration went well enough that at least two people have used it in their writings during the rest of the Institute and at least one other has told me they'll be using it later this summer.
It's a joyous thing to walk around and listen to the groups coming up with their characters and, when bringing the groups together, to hear the different ways in which they worked. Some groups create in a vacuum and then connect. Others work very closely from the outset and ponder, as a group, each decision. The wonderful thing about this method is that they all work.
